This glossary contains words that people can use to describe a video editing process.

effect
noun
The lighting, sound, or scenery used in a play, movie, or broadcast.
Example: Visual and digital video effects are added to the film; this is often outsourced to companies specializing in these areas.

transition
noun
A technique used in the post-production process of film editing and video editing by which scenes or shots are combined.
Example: The video transitions back to real life to show that Mendel and Smear are in the house.

aspect ratio
noun
The ratio of the width to the height of an image or screen.
Example: However the dimensions of the images would be slightly different, although the ASPECT RATIO would remain the same.

bit rate
noun
The number of bits per second that can be transmitted along a digital network.
Example: From the scatter diagram it can be seen that the system is using 64-QAM The BIT RATE has gradually stepped upward to reach its maximum of 48Mb s, roughly proportional the SNR.

compression
noun
Alter the form of (data) to reduce the amount of storage necessary.
Example: Obviously, exact COMPRESSION ratios vary image to image, so I shall give a set of COMPRESSION ratios for different images in the Overall COMPRESSION section.

A common way of compressing files is zipping it, you can also you different software to compress your files including videos
clip
noun
A short sequence taken from a movie or broadcast.
Example: For my Japanese students, in order to focus on these strategies, we might watch a video CLIP of native speakers and highlight strategies such as rephrasing, using fillers and fixed phrase to bide for time.

cut
verb
shorten (a text, movie, or performance) by removing material.
Example: He had to cut unnecessary additions made to the opening scene.

frame rate
noun
The frequency at which frames in a television picture, film, or video sequence are displayed.
Example: The higher frame rate is supposed to make fast action scenes look smoother.

A visual difference of 24 and 60 FPS (frames per second)
storyboard
noun
A sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a movie or television production.
Example: They were creating a storyboard around the subject of bullying at school.

jump cut
noun
An abrupt transition from one scene to another.
Example: The scenes run on or jump-cut into one another.

A scene where multiple jump cuts are made skipping the subjects fashion change
codec
noun
A device or program that compresses data to enable faster transmission and decompresses received data.
Example: You will require a H.264 codec to play the video.

High Definition Media Interface (HDMI)
noun
A standard for connecting high-definition video devices.
Example: Most TVs are equipped with at least one HDMI port.

An HDMI cable permitting videos to be played at high quality
J-cut
noun
Scene transitions where the audio of the next scene precedes the picture change.

A video playing followed by another video with the original audio
L-cut
noun
When the audio from the preceding scene continues to play over the footage from the following scene.

A video where the original audio of the original video continues to play on a different scene
render
verb
Process (an outline image) using color and shading in order to make it appear solid and three-dimensional.
Example: He is forced to render images by intermixing pixels of a few basic colors.

A video rendering using a software called Adobe Media Encoder
rotoscope
noun
A device which projects and enlarges individual frames of filmed live action to permit them to be used to create cartoon animation and composite film sequences.
Example: Film of band members performing was treated with a rotoscope-like effect, adding vivid colors to details like a person's eyes or jewelry.

sound effect (SFX)
noun
A sound other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, movie, or other broadcast production.
Example: PART 4: LOW-LEVEL USABILITY IMPROVEMENTS In the new designed model the feedback is provided to the user by the digital display screen where the screen is updated simultaneously with the changes and also producing SOUND EFFECT and flashing LED, which prompts the user about his or her action.

Popular example are the old school sound effects used in cartoons with onomatopoeia
sync
verb
Cause to occur or operate at the same time or rate.
Example: We can model the transverse gallop, the rotary gallop, and the walk in the same way, but the two 'bipeds' would be moving out of SYNC with each other.

3 dimension (3D)
adjective
Having or appearing to have length, breadth, and depth.
Example: To make this process more accurate, images from two or more cameras could be put together to develop the original 3D model of the robot from the images.

saturation
noun
(especially in photography) The intensity of a color, expressed as the degree to which it differs from white.
Example: Chroma The degree of saturation of a particular color low chroma The degree of saturation of a particular color low chroma means a pastel color, high chroma means a saturated color.

Higher saturation is more torwards the black while lower saturation is more torwards white
